Don’t Kill Your Pets!

Intro- How do I know?

A lifelong pet lover and enthusiast, I’ve researched pet health and nutrition for many years.  I’ve worked at three kennels and have been a dog walker, as well as an animal shelter volunteer.  Currently, I still work at a great kennel called It’s a Dog’s Life, and I am a distributor for a wonderful pet food company, Flint River Ranch.

Working at these kennels, I’ve seen first hand what a lifetime of poor nutrition and commercial diets can do to a dog.  In contrast, I’ve also seen the effects of feeding high quality foods and providing proper nutrition.  Your pets don’t know any better.  They don’t know what’s in their food, but after reading my posts, you will.  So for the sake of your beloved pet, take a look at what I have to say.

These are my three beloved pets.  They are all in perfect health and  I want to give them as many years to live as possible.

Isaac has been my inspiration and constant companion for 11 years.  He is a Husky cross with Basenji, Coonhound, and possibly Ridgeback.  He’s been with me since I was 10 years old and has taught me an invaluable amount about dogs and about myself.  He is the reason that I decided to start working with dogs.  He’s extremely loyal, intelligent, protective, and has an eagerness to please that I’ve never seen anything like.

Bucket is a three-year-old Pit Bull cross.  Bucket entered my life when I met my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years, Jesse.  He had gotten Bucket at just four weeks old, after him and his litter mates had been forced to be weaned too early.  He has also taught me a lot.  He is a vibrant, happy dog and is always full of life.  Extremely social and too smart for his own good, living with him has been quite an adventure.  I’ve had much fun practicing my training on him, as he is quite a challenge, but also quick to learn.

Julius is my orange tabby who became part our lives a year and half ago.  When I first brought him home, Bucket wanted to eat him.  Isaac had already lived with cats and loved them, but it was extremely difficult to get Bucket to realize that he was not a snack.  Just when I was beginning to think that this would never work and find a new home for Julius, the most amazing thing happened.

Suddenly, Bucket began to see the kitten as a friend.  He would watch him calmly and be very gentle around him.  Eventually, they became the best of friends.

To this day, they have very entertaining wrestling matches together in our living room.  Bucket remains very gentle, never laying a tooth on him.  They are best buds.  Julius, having grown up with two dogs from the age of eight weeks old, has become more dog like than cat like.  He enjoys many normal dog activities such as drinking out of the toilet, chewing on bones, and fetching.

So, for anyone who might think that a Pit Bull could never be nice and gentle to its fellow animals, the bond between Bucket and Julius should prove you wrong.
